“I was created that way and I didn't die”.
“A spanking never hurt anyone”.
“This is no tie”.
“Swallow that cry”.
“Respect is good and keeps your teeth”.
The idea of family is associated with a context of support and love. A safe haven that should always be available to welcome us. However, the various forms of violence against children occur mostly within their family nuclei.
When talking about violence, it is often only thought of in extreme cases, such as physical and / or sexual abuse. However, there are many other forms that appear disguised as love or education: screams, pinches, ear tugs, derogatory adjectives, threats, intimidation. These patterns are repeated and used, often, automatically and without criticism. Did you have any of these experiences as a child? And today, how do you educate your children? Have you ever wondered if you reproduce these false educational practices?
The child victim of these aggressions feels guilty and responsible for the discomfort generated in adults. These feelings have a strong chance of generating negative consequences throughout her life, including the way she will educate her children.
Finally, it is important to emphasize that it is the role of caregivers to find loving and understanding ways of imposing limits, educating and protecting while providing care, love and affection.
