Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) was developed in the 1960s by North American psychiatrist Aaron Beck. Among the characteristics of CBT are the fact that it is a brief, structured and present-day therapy. The initial assumption is that cognitions influence feelings and behaviors. Based on examination of cognitions and their restructuring through various techniques when they are dysfunctional. It is noteworthy that this is an evolving theory, several concepts were later integrated into the initial model developed by Beck. Since its inception there has been a commitment to the search for evidence on efficacy, which has led to a large number of well-established research and indications as first-line treatment (alone or in combination with psychotropic drugs) for various clinical conditions, for example. , anxiety disorders, bipolar and depressive disorders, trauma and stress-related eating disorders, substance use disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, psychotic disorders, personality disorders. In addition to the clinical frameworks cited, this course addresses the use of CBT in addressing couples and families in childhood and adolescence, sexual dysfunction, chronic pain, impulse control disorders and group CBT. As mentioned earlier, the evolution of theory has incorporated new concepts, some of which are also covered in this course, such as Schema Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Dialectic Behavior Therapy and Mindfulness modules. CBT is a valuable conceptualization and treatment model for professionals who provide clinical / psychotherapeutic care.
