Social isolation is a reality in the current time of the Covid-19 pandemic. The aim of this measure is to reduce people's exposure to the virus, minimize the risk of contamination and prepare health systems to treat people affected by the disease. In view of this scenario, despite the physical distance, the phenomenon of people approaching through Information and Communication Technologies has been observed. This virtual approach carries with it factors that can further challenge people to be assertive in social interactions.
People are plural, with different beliefs and ideals, which are built from the experiences and life stories of each one . Thus, it is simple to imagine that you will not always agree with the opinion of others and that does not mean that you need to be aggressive or offensive to express yourself. In social networks like Twitter, Whatsapp or Facebook there is a great space for expressing opinions, feelings and information. When using them, try to exercise the ability to empathize by asking yourself: “In the place of that person, could I understand this situation in this way?” or "Will my comment be constructive?" Still, it is important to remember that there is great scope for the distorted interpretation of “posts” due to the absence of markers that facilitate our social interaction face to face, such as: non-verbal language, tone of voice or facial expression. Also, when thinking about assertiveness in online interactions it is super important to be on the lookout for fake news. Make sure that the content you are sharing is from safe and up-to-date sources.
In this delicate moment of crisis, try to be kind to yourself and other people. It's not easy for anyone. Exercise empathy, put yourself in the other's shoes, use ICTs in a healthy and responsible way to get through this moment with the least possible damage to interpersonal relationships.
