15.06 - World Day for Awareness of Violence against the Elderly

Reaching old age is part of the life cycle, and it is also a stage where several changes take place. Perhaps one of the biggest changes is the loss of autonomy, which brings with it the condition of becoming dependent on the other.

The affective relationships established throughout life, with family and friends, are fundamental for the elderly to feel supported and welcomed, and so that they can maintain the feeling of belonging.

As the aging process is a worldwide phenomenon, a date was set to mark the awareness of violence against the elderly, which takes place on June 15th. Violence can be any single or recurring attitude and / or omission that causes harm or discomfort to the elderly. The purpose of this date is to raise people's awareness to curb the various forms of violence.

It is a privilege to grow old and to be able to experience new things with all the learning of life. It is up to us all to respect the elders and their limitations! Text by psychologist Bruna Carlesso of the CEFI SYS team - Systemic Therapy.
