International Day against Homophobia

The May 17th celebrates the international day against homophobia. Let's remember why the date. On this day, in 1990, the World Health Organization (WHO) withdrew the homosexuality of the International Statistical Classification of Health Related Diseases and Problems (CID). In this way, it was evidenced that homosexuality is as healthy orientation as to heterosexuality. I believe that the decision was another step against prejudice and discrimination, and very important for understanding homosexuality as being a sexual orientation, an element of human sexuality.

The date has become very important worldwide, serving to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of citizenship and respect for human rights of lesbians, gay, bisexuals, transvestites and transsexuals, queers, intersexuals, asexual and all The other existences of genres and sexualities. Human rights, we need to talk about it.

Homophobia and transfor kills. Physical and emotional violence against LGBTQIA + is a social problem that shows hatred crimes. They are the offenses, bullying at school, family abandonment, adult life, finally denim, reactions that held people who have a gender identity or a different sexual orientation of the heterocynormative pattern. Violence against a person sends a cruel message to other people in the same condition, for their families, who may be living with constant fear. Did you go safely? Did you return home?

The reality is serious and has become even more aggravated in recent months. I have observed much suffering with social isolation with the pandemic of Covid-19. Many people have come to live more at home with their relatives and this, in the context of people LGBTQIA +, which has no family acceptance, has provoked the increase of domestic violence, as well as decreasing the coexistence with their friends who symbolize the family of choice. / p>

It is quite clear, but it is worth stressing how much the family realizes and deals with the diversities of sexual orientation or gender identity is strongly related to the health and general well-being of the LGBTQIA + population. I think that today's date is fundamental to score another day of struggles and resistances, seeking the legitimation of LGBTQIA + life. It is a fact that information helps reflect and decrease prejudices. And currently the search for information is a political act to show that this type of hatred can not be tolerated or in your home or on your street. LGBTQIA + needs to be protected from toxic speeches. Houses, colleges, companies, communities Should be welcoming spaces The existence of the other legitimating freedom and the right to be, exist and love!
